If you stopped by Pictures in a Row last week, you might have seen something like this going on in the parking lot.

And if you walked into the kitchen, some of these people might have been hanging around . . .

And if you stepped into the warehouse, you might find it looking a little bit different.

No, it’s not a new production office, although Moira may have used it to make a few phone calls.
This naval command center was built as part of the USAA Autocircle commercial Peter Lang was shooting last week and it sure made a cool addition to the building! Definitely one of our favorite sets built here at Picrow!

Recently Picrowers traveled to Ohio (a place many of us hail from!) to meet some amazing people doing fantastic work at Mercy hospitals. Over the course of the week, we shot some incredibly brave patients and remarkably caring doctors, nurses, and service people from many different areas of the hospital. It was a blast!

What could be more fun than spending a couple days in the sun by the pool? Picrowers took a trip out to Carlsbad to shoot for Legoland’s new water park. The thought of combining cameras with water may make one wonder how such a thing could be done. Well, we had some pretty interesting camera housing.

And we also found ways to shoot with the camera well out of the water.

Overall, we had a blast!

Even if Picrow is busy and bustling, Percival Pyewacket Lang and Cecil Dorian Lang nobly try to keep us grounded.

SourceEcreative just posted an announcement of our favorite new Pictures in a Row director, Andrew French. They quote French as saying, “On my first visit to Pictures in a Row I noticed that all the walls, offices and conference rooms were lined with beautiful floor-to-ceiling shelves. On these shelves, in row after row, were thousands of things I had never seen in a production company before—books.” French is funny, and also this is true and one of our favorite parts about the office! Thanks to Peter’s professor father, we have TONS of amazing books. Sometimes it is a little distracting for those of us who are a little too attracted to those page-y bodies, but it makes for a pretty gorgeous environment to work in, I must say. We love books almost as much as artist Paulus Octavious, whose work as you can see below, uses the pages a little differently. Maybe next time we need a little inspiration on one of our projects, we can take a hint from Octavious and put these books to different and unexpected usage.

A film edited by our very own Nicole Vaskell is premiering at SXSW nest week. Kelp, directed by Ben Dohrmann and Seth Cuddeback, is a story of a man’s rather, shall we say, unorthodox relationship to the sea.

The thing is, even though we may feel overly cheesy, like snooty intellectuals when every other sentence that comes out of our mouths is “Did you read that article in the New York Times this week?” or “Did you read that New Yorker piece”— especially since we are Angelenos at heart—the honest-to-god truth is that these publications are unique in an era of the decline of trustworthy news sources. Plus, don’t get us started on the fabulous talent coming out of there, ahem, ARIEL LEVY, ahem. And next week we will promise to quote NPR/KCRW which is always in our heads and our offices, but this week we just had to share this fabulous interactive piece on the web about NY coffee. yummmm! Stumptown (ok, portland coffee) and gimme coffee (i think that one is real nyc coffee), but let’s face it, we need an city of angels coffee snobbery map for Groundworks and Lamill and Intelligentsia. sigh. swoon. gulp. Coffee helps us get our work done, but good coffee helps us make it that much better.

Pictures in a Row director Andrew French was recently in NYC to shoot Ryco Disk’s recording artist, Tara Angel, Memphis legendary band Big Star, and Matador Records Kurt Vile and the Violators, at the Brooklyn Masonic Temple.
All of New York’s rock elite showed up for what was a stellar night of music.
Andrew has shot bands in New York for the last ten years, although shooting commercials has taken up most of his time and now lives in LA, he told us “it was great to get back into the pit and loose one’s hearing for a few days”.
Expect to see more photos this year as he has been asked to shoot more shows in February and March for AP News.
